We provide courses in Greek for beginners. These include young school students from Year 7 upwards, and adults who have an interest in Greek and who may or may not have studied it at school.
Every student is a unique client, and there is no standard course. This is particularly the case with beginners. But our advice is that students should gain at least a grounding in the grammar of Greek, and that they should read as much Greek as they can fit into their learning schedule.
Books
The best place to start with Greek is Volume One of John Taylor’s Greek to GCSE. This assumes no previous experience of Latin, and little prior knowledge of grammar. Since the Renaissance, the custom has been to treat Greek as an exotic dialect of Latin. The benefit of this approach is that the two languages are similar in the outlines of their grammar, and often similar in the details of their syntax. Students who have already studied Latin to at least intermediate level can be hurried through the elements of Greek by showing these similarities. They will also have done the basic work of learning about cases and tenses and participles in Latin. Students now come in growing numbers directly to Greek. The value of the Taylor course is that it does all the basic work without more than passing reference to Latin. Together, the two volumes will get students to GCSE within about a year, and probably able to read the New Testament without serious hardship. The first volume alone covers all the main tenses, and takes students to the point where they can make an informed choice about how to go further.
