Teaching Ancient Languages with Clarity, Discipline, and Method

We specialise in teaching Latin, Greek, and Classical Civilisation. Our students range from those preparing for Common Entrance and major scholarships to pupils working towards GCSE, A-Level, and university study.

Across all levels, our teaching is guided by a simple principle: ancient languages are systems, and they must be taught as such. We do not rely on shortcuts, or vague explanation. Students are trained to understand how the language works and to account precisely for what they read.

Our Method

  • Grammar Is Taught Explicitly and Systematically
    Students learn the forms and functions of cases, tenses, moods, and constructions, and are expected to use them accurately. We insist on grammatical reasoning, not intuition or pattern-spotting.

  • Parsing Is Central to Learning
    Students analyse sentences word by word, identifying both form and function. This prevents the accumulation of hidden misunderstandings and builds precision, confidence, and independence.

  • Assessment Is Continuous and Diagnostic
    We use a large bank of carefully constructed grammar and vocabulary tests, alongside targeted exercises generated where needed, to identify exactly where understanding breaks down. Teaching is then directed at those specific weaknesses, rather than following a generic syllabus.

  • Practice Is Structured and Corrected
    Work is not merely set but carefully marked, with clear explanations of errors and guidance for improvement. Students are shown not only that something is wrong, but why it is wrong and how to correct it.

  • Modern Tools Support Traditional Rigour
    We make disciplined use of digital resources, including shared documents, annotated texts, and selectively applied AI tools. These allow for the rapid creation of targeted exercises, the tracking of progress, and the reinforcement of learning between lessons—without replacing the need for careful thought and exact understanding.

  • Authentic Texts Are Introduced Early
    As soon as a student is ready, we move beyond artificial exercises to real Latin and Greek. This develops seriousness, motivation, and a sense that the subject is intellectually alive.

Standards, Calm, and Discipline

Lessons are calm and focused. We do not talk down to students, but we do expect attention and regular work.

By discipline we mean habit, routine, and consistency: arriving prepared, thinking carefully, and improving steadily. This approach suits able students particularly well, but it also enables weaker students to make progress without confusion or panic.

Individual Teaching, Realistic Judgement

Some students are preparing for the most competitive scholarships. Others require firm, structured guidance to reach a secure pass. We teach both, but we do so honestly.

We know when to push and when to steady. Every student receives careful attention, intellectual seriousness, and teaching that respects both their ability and their time.

A Note for Parents

We regard parents as partners in the educational process. All tutors hold current Enhanced DBS clearance with live update registration and have completed formal training in safeguarding and teaching practice. Parents are welcome to observe lessons, particularly at the outset, and we encourage regular communication.

Our teaching is purposeful and distraction-free: no gimmicks, no padding, no wasted time—only serious work, clearly explained.
