I try to keep my teaching methods up to date. The includes making use of information technology where it genuinely helps learning. Here, I am putting my (limited) skills with PHP and JavaScript coding to generate a wide range of multiple-choice tests for Latin and Greek.
Some of these are general vocabulary tests, designed to cover the words required for British examinations from Common Entrance through to A-Level. Some test the basic grammar of each language. Others are more focused and test the vocabulary of particular Greek and Latin texts.
In my own teaching, I give students fully parsed texts. This removes the need to keep stopping to look up words or grammatical points and allows lessons to focus on structure, syntax, and meaning. To support this work, I have begun adding a short multiple-choice vocabulary test to each text, covering only the words that appear in that passage. Now that the basic code exists, creating new tests is mostly a matter of preparing the vocabulary lists and saving them as CSV files.
Although these tests are written for my own students, they are freely available to anyone who finds them useful. I dislike paywalls and would not want independent learners to feel reluctant to use the material.
Given the volume of material, occasional errors are inevitable. If you spot one, please let me know and I will correct it. I am also happy to receive suggestions for additional tests, whether or not you are one of my students.
