For families who expect more from their travels than sun and scenery, I offer a bespoke service: private classical tuition and cultural guiding aboard your yacht or charter vessel—an immersive experience in the languages, literature, and history of the ancient Mediterranean.
What I Offer
• Classical Tuition for Children and Teenagers
Each day, I provide tailored instruction in Latin and Ancient Greek. Whether your children are beginners or preparing for competitive scholarship exams, they will receive the same high standard of teaching I provide to my long-standing private clients—many of whom go on to Eton, Westminster, Winchester, and other elite schools.
• Evening Lectures for Adults
In the evening, I give engaging and accessible lectures on ancient history, literature, and philosophy. These are designed to stimulate intelligent discussion rather than impose formal instruction. Possible topics include:
– The Fall of the Roman Republic: Politics and Personality
– Troy and Mycenae: Epic and Archaeology
– The Ancient Economy: What the Ancients Understood—And What They Didn’t
• Private Tours of Classical Sites and Museums
In each port of historical interest, I can accompany you ashore to explore ruins, museums, and local landmarks. I offer more than what the usual guidebooks can provide: original context, live translations of inscriptions, and discussion grounded in deep historical knowledge.
Why This Is Unique
Many yachts carry entertainers. A few carry tutors. Very few carry a resident scholar—a guide who can make Athens, Ephesus or Ostia come alive through first-hand knowledge and original-language insight.
This is not a “course” or a “tour package.” It is a fully bespoke cultural experience—an opportunity to travel through history as well as geography, with your family’s intellectual and educational needs at the centre.
About Me
I am Dr Sean Gabb: classicist, historian, and author of more than forty books, several of which have been translated into German, Spanish, Italian, Greek, Slovak, and Chinese. I have taught Greek and Latin to gifted pupils for over thirty years, including intensive preparation for the most competitive British scholarship examinations. I also teach adult classes in ancient languages and literature at City Lit in London.
When not teaching, I travel widely through the lands of the ancient world. I have walked the ruins of Carthage and Delphi, lingered in the palaces of Knossos and Split, and studied the inscriptions of Aphrodisias and Pompeii. It is my pleasure to make these civilisations speak again—for young and old alike.
